What Should a Shipping Container Sit On? Foundation Options Compared.

You don't need a concrete slab. Let's get that out of the way first, because it's the assumption that stalls more container purchases than anything else. These boxes were engineered to sit on four corner castings on a rolling ship deck. They're happy on far less than most people pour for them.
What a container foundation actually has to do
Three jobs. Keep the box level so the doors work. Keep the corners supported, because that's where the frame carries its weight. Keep the underside out of standing water so the cross members don't sit in a puddle for ten years.
Any setup that does those three things is a good foundation. Everything else is preference and budget.
Bare ground
Works better than its reputation, on the right ground. Firm, high, and well-drained, and a container can sit for a season or two without complaint. The trouble shows up slowly: soil settles unevenly, the frame twists a hair, and one day the doors need a hip check to close. Wet ground is worse, since the steel underneath stays damp and rusts faster than it should. Fine for short-term. Not our pick for years.
Gravel pad
Our usual recommendation, and what most customers end up with. A few inches of compacted gravel, graded level and a bit wider than the container's footprint. It drains, it doesn't heave much, it's cheap, and it's easy to touch up if anything settles. If you're doing one thing to prep your site, do this.
Blocking under the corners
Solid concrete blocks or pressure-treated timbers under the four corner castings. This is the cheapest way to get the box dead level on sloped or imperfect ground, and it puts airflow under the floor, which the steel appreciates. Use solid blocks, not hollow ones on their sides, and check them after the first winter.
Concrete piers
Poured footings under the corners, set below frost line. This is permanent-installation territory: a container that's becoming a workshop, an office, or part of a building. More money and more digging, but it won't move, ever.
Full slab
Sometimes the right call, usually overkill. Pour one if you're driving equipment in and out over a ramp, if the container is part of a permitted permanent structure, or if you simply already have a slab sitting there. For plain storage, the money does more good spent on the container itself.
Don't forget the truck
Whatever you build, build it before delivery day, and remember the container arrives on a tilt-bed that needs a straight run to slide the box off. One paperwork note
A handful of counties have opinions about container foundations, tie-downs included, especially in high-wind areas. Check yours before you build anything. Our permits and placement guide is a good starting point.
Our honest advice
Gravel pad, checked with a level, done a week before the truck shows up. That covers the vast majority of buyers. Go piers or slab when the container stops being storage and starts being a building.
