Refrigerated Containers Explained: Working, Non-Working, and Insulated-Only.

"Reefer" gets used for three pretty different things, and buying the wrong one is an expensive mix-up in both directions. Some folks pay for refrigeration machinery they'll never plug in. Others buy a dead unit expecting it to hold temperature. Quick tour of what each actually is.

Working reefer

A container with a functioning refrigeration unit built into one end. Set a temperature and it holds it, freezing included, which is the whole point.

The catch is what it takes to run one. These units typically want 460-volt three-phase power, which is industrial service, not the outlet in your garage. Step-down transformers exist, but now you're buying equipment to feed equipment. And the refrigeration plant is machinery: it needs maintenance, and it will eventually need repair like anything else with a compressor.

Who should buy one: anyone who genuinely needs cold. Produce operations, meat processing, hunters, caterers, breweries. If that's you, buy from someone who can show you the unit running and tell you its service history.

Non-working reefer

Same insulated box, but the refrigeration machinery is dead or removed. What's left is essentially a giant thermos: foam-insulated walls, ceiling, and floor, with a food-grade stainless or aluminum interior that wipes clean.

This is the sleeper deal of the container world. If what you actually want is an insulated steel room, and a lot of workshop, storage, and conversion buyers do, a non-working reefer hands you factory insulation that would take a contractor days to replicate. No power required, nothing to maintain.

Insulated-only

You'll also see units listed as insulated containers: either built without machinery or with the machinery removed and the opening plated over. In practice they behave like non-working reefers. The one thing worth checking is how that machinery opening was sealed, since a sloppy plate-over is a leak waiting for a storm.

Quirks all three share

  • Smaller inside. Insulation thickness comes out of the interior, so a reefer's inside dimensions run tighter than a standard box of the same nominal size, typically by several inches each direction. Compare against our sizes and dimensions page before you plan shelving.
  • T-rail floors. Aluminum channel flooring built for airflow under pallets. Great for its purpose, mildly annoying for shelf feet and rolling toolboxes. A sheet of plywood over the top solves it.
  • Serious door seals. Reefer doors gasket hard, which is great for the seal and worth remembering when you think about ventilation for whatever you store.

Which one do you actually need?

Need to hold a set temperature: working reefer, and budget for power and upkeep. Need insulation without a project: non-working or insulated-only, and pocket the difference.
