Grass, Gravel, or Concrete: What Can You Set a Container On?.

We've set containers on all three, plenty of times. The truck doesn't care much. The question isn't whether the delivery works, it's what your container looks like six months and two wet seasons later.
Short version: gravel is the sweet spot for most people, concrete is the gold standard if you already have it, and grass is fine as long as you don't put the box directly on it. Here's the longer version.
Grass and bare dirt: fine, with one condition
Containers get dropped on lawns and field edges every day. The problem isn't day one, it's month six. Soil holds moisture against the underside of the box, the corners sink unevenly as the ground softens, and once a container goes out of level, the doors tell you immediately by refusing to swing right.
The condition: get it up on blocking. Railroad ties, solid concrete blocks, or poured pads under the corners. A container carries its weight at the corner castings, the reinforced blocks at each corner, so four points of support is all it needs. Blocking gets air moving underneath, keeps steel out of the mud, and gives you a fighting chance of staying level. One more grass warning: a loaded tilt-bed truck is heavy, and a soft lawn after rain will swallow it. If the forecast is wet, talk to us about timing.
Gravel: what we'd do at our own place
A gravel pad drains, spreads the load, discourages weeds and rodents, and costs a fraction of concrete. Four to six inches of compacted crushed stone, typical, over a footprint a bit larger than the container, and you've solved moisture, level, and mud in one weekend.
Crushed stone with fines compacts tight and stays put; round river rock rolls around and doesn't. If you're only doing one site improvement before delivery, this is the one.
Concrete: the best surface you probably shouldn't pour
An existing slab or driveway is a great container home: dead level, bone dry, zero settling. If you've got one with room, use it.
Pouring new concrete just for storage is usually overkill, and it comes with a wrinkle: a permanent slab can nudge your container from "temporary placement" toward "permanent structure" in the eyes of some counties and HOAs, which changes the permit conversation. A good middle option: six concrete piers or pads at the corners and midpoints. Slab-level performance at a fraction of the cost.
Whatever the surface, three rules
- Level matters more than material. A container that's twisted even slightly binds its doors. Check level corner to corner at delivery, not a month later.
- Air underneath. Moisture rising off the ground is what rusts floors from below. Any surface plus blocking beats any surface without it.
- Think about the truck, not just the box. The tilt-bed needs a straight, firm run-up to the spot. The prettiest pad in the world is useless if the truck can't reach it; our delivery clearance guide has the numbers.
Get the surface sorted, and the rest of container ownership is quiet. When the pad's ready, pick your box from the inventory and it lands on it for a flat $440, anywhere in the lower 48.
