The classic way to get burned: a listing priced way under everyone else, a seller who needs a deposit today because "three other people are asking," and payment by wire or app transfer. Two weeks later the phone number's dead. Container scams are out there, they look professional, and they lean on the fact that most buyers never visit a yard.

Buying remotely is how this business works now, and it's fine. You just need a short checklist.

Red flags that end the conversation

• A price dramatically below every other quote you've gotten. Containers are a commodity; nobody has a secret supply at half price.
• Wire transfer, Zelle, or gift cards as the only payment options.
• No physical yard address, or an address that turns out to be a vacant lot when you check it on a map.
• Stock photos only, and excuses when you ask for pictures of the actual unit.
• Deposit pressure with a countdown attached.

Questions that sort dealers from fakes

Ask for photos or video of the specific unit, with its container number visible. Every container has a unique ID on the doors. A seller who owns the box can photograph it today. A seller who doesn't will send you something from Google.

Call the phone number. Not to be polite, but to see who answers. Someone who can talk grades, door hardware, and delivery clearances off the cuff works with containers. Someone reading a script doesn't.

Ask where it ships from and how delivery works. Real dealers have a real answer with a real timeframe.

Learn five words of vocabulary

Scam listings and lazy listings both hide behind vague grading. Know what one-trip, cargo-worthy, and wind-and-watertight actually promise before you compare prices, because a cheap "used container" quote means nothing without a grade attached.
